All About Me - My Personal Bio
I grew up in central Virginia, attending a private school in Petersburg, Va. I graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1991 with a B. S. in Mathematics. I continued on to earn my M.S. Statistics from Ga. Tech in 1993. While I was at Ga. Tech, I worked closely with the Athletic Tutoring Department, and athletes such as David Duvall, Dorsey Levens, Nomar Garciaparra, Jason Varitek, Mike Cheever, and many others. I never quite realized at the time what could and would become of these athletes!
After spending 2 years in Charlottesville, my husband and I located to Fishersville, in Augusta County. I helped develop the new math curriculum for Central Shenandoah Valley Governors School, a local school for gifted and talented high school students in Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County. This was an integrated math/science/technology curriculum with applications as the driving curriculum. We also conducted inservices for local teachers, and brought our extensive technology to the local classrooms for demonstrations
I took an unofficial hiatus to have a family that now includes four daughters, ages 10, 9, 7, and 4. Fall and Spring find us at numerous soccer practices, and all day at the soccer fields on Saturdays for games. The girls are also interested in art, piano, basketball, theater. They all tolerate math, but none have the LOVE for it like I did at their age but I am working on it! Our family is completed by 4 cats, and a newly added dog. (I am not a dog person, so this was a major concession on my part for my 9 year old who hates cats and has always wanted a dog)
After home-schooling my children one year, I realized it was time for me to return to the calm and intellectually challenging life of an adult career. I worked part-time at JMU for 2 years before becoming full-time. I mainly teach math 220, which I thoroughly enjoy. I enjoy working with one-on-one students who may traditionally hate math.
My hobbies include scrapbooking, not for the artistic outlet but for
the preservation for future generations. I not only make my own albums, but a
set for each daughter that she may have when she grows up. I also read
finance and political commentary
books.
