Shenandoah Presbyterians
For Restoring Creation
Who We Are...
In 1990 the 202nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) began
an effort which it has consistently affirmed over the past decade. In this
action, recognized for addressing problems faced by human beings,
Presbyterians for Restoring Creation was called to respond to the
environmental crisis. In particular, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
was called to
i.) respond to the cry of creation, human and nonhuman;
ii.) engage in the "turnaround decade," not only for reasons of
prudence or survival, but because the endangered planet is
God's creation; and
iii.) draw upon all the resources of biblical faith and the
Reformed tradition for empowerment and guidance in this adventure.
The Shenandoah Presbytery has been involved in this restoration effort
from the beginning. Rev. John Harris, Bunker Hill Presbyterian
Church, served as Restoring Creation Enabler for the Shenandoah
Presbytery from inception to the close of the decade in 1999.
Bill Sanders, an elder from Trinity Presbyterian, became the
PRC for Shenandoah Presbytery after having received training at
St. Simon's Island, Georgia, in March, 2000.
Presbyterians for Restoring Creation awarded the first national
congregational award to Restoring Creation House Church, the
environmentaly active house church called by members of
Trinity Presbyterian Church of Harrisonburg. Although Restoring
Creation House Church is called under guidance from the Session
at Trinity, membership has included persons from Massanutten
Presbyterian Church. Also Lutheran and Mennonite faithful have
been active and supportive of the entire concept.
