Lesson Plan

1. Introduction to Identification numbers

    - class discussion on examples & use different types of ID numbers (student numbers)

II. Transition to UPC Codes (for products in stores)

-call on what the students know (grocery stores, shopping mall, scanners, etc.) and discuss

        possible uses (see notes)

III. UPC Scheme (see notes)

      - overhead examples of dot-product (to be noted together on overhead0

*NOTE: Assumption here is that dot-product and modular arithmetic have previously been

covered been covered in class. (if not, more details may be required)

      - guided practice with example of  "Verify the validity of UPC..." (review on overhead)

IV. More guided/independent practice on back of worksheet (possible modeling with Example 3)

V. Bar Codes and UPC

     - class notes/class activity with bar codes

VI. Assessment for UPC/ Bar Codes

SOL Reference: Sorting and coding algorithms actually under the SOLs for optional math courses, specifically Discrete Math.

DM.11  The student will describe and apply sorting algorithms and coding algorithms used in

sorting, processing, and communicating information. These will include

                                -  bubble sort, merge sort, and network sort, and ISBN, UPC, Zip and bank

                                    codes.

This course could also be tied in with algebra lessons and SOLs relating to dot-products in

courses of Advanced Algebra/ Math Analysis/ Trigonometry.
